I once heard an Arab traveler tell the following story to a group of jewelers in Basra:

“A few years ago, I lost my way in the desert. I gave up hope for any deliverance but saw in the distance an oasis. Probably a mirage, I thought. But when I arrived, there was, in fact, actual water.

“I was saved but still very hungry. Behind one of the palm trees, I found a large sack that was very heavy. I jumped for joy, as I thought that it must be roasted wheat or rice that some caravan had left behind.

“Imagine my bitter disappointment when I opened the sack and found that it contained nothing but pearls.”
